Bridging sustainability and comms teams

The more conversations I have, the clearer this becomes:

Sustainability communications can’t sit in a silo anymore.

For a while, many organisations have treated sustainability as a reporting exercise, a compliance requirement, or a set of targets to announce externally.

But the more I think about it, the more I believe the real opportunity is bigger than that.

Done well, sustainability strategy and communications are really about 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

They’re about helping companies answer questions like:
✔️ How do we stay credible with investors?
✳️ How do we show we understand the risks ahead?
📈 How do we connect sustainability issues to long-term business survival?
🥗 How do we communicate progress honestly, without slipping into greenwash?

With UKSRS on the horizon, this matters even more.

Yes, accountants and compliance teams will play a critical role in helping you comply with the disclosure requirements. But comms teams need to be in the room too — because the narrative a company tells externally has to align with what it is formally disclosing.

That’s where I’m increasingly focusing my attention:

Helping organisations connect sustainability, reporting, and external narrative through an investor and resilience lens.

Not sustainability as a side project.
Not sustainability as a box-ticking exercise.
But sustainability as part of the core story of how a business survives and earns trust over the long term.

I think the companies that understand this early will be in a much stronger position than those still treating it as a separate workstream.
